BNF: Mixed messages leave UK adults confused about nutrition

Food Labelling Services comments:

New research from the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) reveals that 43 percent of adults surveyed admit that they find it difficult to find reliable information on healthy diets, with changing information, messages and advice from media and experts being the biggest causes for confusion (76 percent and 61 percent respectively).

Roy Ballam, BNF’s Managing Director and Head of Education, said: 'With 2/3 of Adults in the UK overwight or obese, the UK is in the middle of an obesity crisis – and a lack of consumer knowledge and reliable information on healthy eating is a huge cause for concern.

Education for the consumer is paramount to tackling the obesity crisis, and a consistent clear message is essential. Obesity is costing the country billions of pounds due to its effect on health, and putting a significant strain on the NHS. Our opinion is that if we can educate the population to eat healthily, and manage their weight, the benefits to public health will be enormous.
