Food Labelling Services comments:
Currently the UK is proposing to import all the EU related Food Labelling legislation, with certain amends proposed to Healthmarks, Organic and Business name and address. Guidance has been issued by the European Union regarding the labelling changes required for goods outside the UK after we leave Europe. The UK has no control over how food labelling changes will be enforced outside the UK.
To continue exporting to the EU, UK Food and Drinks companies need to make these changes now, to ensure that the amends that are required, (for example a UK business name and address rather than an EU business name and address) can be implemented to maintain trade. We have extremely limited clarity from the Government however on some of these proposed changes, such as healthmarks, geographical indicators and the use of the organic logo, and these could be dependant on whether there is a trade deal agreed with the EU or not.
Redesigning a label is not a quick or simple process, with compliance checks required prior to going to print, to avoid incorrect artwork being generated, and huge write-off costs incurred. There are only a limited number of printers, and the lack of capacity will cause further bottlenecks. Manufacturers in the UK are running out of time to process the required changes to be compliant to export to the EU by the deadline of January 1st 2021.
