Carbon Neutral Claims

Food Labelling Services comments:
Even with certification from the Carbon Trust and compliance with PAS2060 (international standard for carbon neutrality), Danone is being sued in the USA. Carbon neutral is an extremely risky claim to make on packaging, even with certification, as there is no regulatory definition of carbon neutral. Alternatives to declaring ‘carbon neutral’ per se could be ‘This product was produced in a manner intended to reduce its carbon footprint’ or ‘with each sale we take efforts to achieve carbon neutrality’ as these are more statements of intent.
