Low alcohol and alcohol free - the difference between the UK & EU
Prior to Brexit, the free movement of goods within all the member states of the EU is one of the main principles, and no Member State may legitimately block the import of products legitimately placed on the market in another member state. This is known as the 'Cassis de Dijon' principle. Therefore, EU Alcohol Free Beer at 0.5% ABV was traded on the UK market. However, post Brexit, the UK is no longer a Member State, and in theory is not bound by the Cassis de Dijon principle. Therefore, the only Alcohol Free beers that should be traded on the market, are those that comply with the UK's regulation of <0.05%ABV.
Food Labelling Services comments:
This is one of the many differences between UK and EU law that require careful checking. Although the Food Information Regulations (EU) 1169/2011 have been adopted into UK law, it does not mean that the labelling requirements for the UK and EU are identical. Great care should be taken, and advice from experts should be considered.
