French retailers unveil alternative nutrition label

French retailers have unveiled an alternative 'simplified' nutrition label which rivals the five-coloured label and banishes the red traffic light that they cast as discriminatory against certain foods.

Working together under industry trade group FCD (Fédération des entreprises du commerce et de la distribution), major French retailers such as Carrefour, Auchan and Casino presented their own nutrition label to the French ministry of health for its consideration last week during a consultation meeting.

Tougher fines for most serious food crimes

Businesses found guilty of corporate manslaughter and the most serious food crimes will face tougher fines under new guidelines published on November 3rd. Companies with turnovers of over £50M could be fined up to £20M for corporate manslaughter and up to £3M for breach of food safety regulations, according to the sentencing guidelines.

The meat industry has defended eating processed meat as the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned of the cancer risk.
  

Processed meat has been classified as “carcinogenic to humans” in a report from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
