Pea protein trend sparks allergy warning

With the increase in vegan and vegetarian products on the market as consumers want to reduce their meat intake, there is some evidence emerging that the increased use of concentrated pea protein could be a factor in increased reports of allergy to peas. Allergic reaction to legumes is rare, but can occur.

Food Labelling Services comments:

It is extremely important to ensure that all products are labelled correctly, and that vegetable proteins are specified to the exact protein that it is derived from. This is particularly important in the instances of hydrolysed vegetable proteins which can be derived from Soya, which is one of the 14 EU recognised allergens.
