'Vegan cheese' banned but 'veggie burger' still on the table, votes European Parliament
The EU parliament case its final vote on 2 amendments concerning the use of dairy terms and meaty terminology for plant-based alternatives. MEPs voted to ban the use of dairy terms for plant based alternative (Article 171), however, amendment 165, which proposed to prohibit terms such as burger, sausage and steak has not been passed.
Under this new proposal, terms such as ‘almond milk’ and ‘vegan cheese’, as well as ‘yogurt-style’ and ‘cheese alternative’ used for dairy-free products will also be banned. Companies who produce dairy alternatives could be prevented from using traditional packaging styles such as butter blocks and milk cartons for their products.

Food Labelling Services comments:
There has been protection of Dairy Terms since 2017, banning the use of dairy names for purely plant based products. This has, however, been largely ignored by the industry, and there is plenty of evidence of vegan 'cheese' and other dairy alternativesusing dairy terminology on teh market. Since this ruling, it will now be clear that these terms should not be used.
There is relief however for the plant based meal products, as the terms burger, sausage and steak are allowed to be used, as long as there is a clear description in the legal name, as to the true nature of the product.
