A novel food is defined as 'Foods and food ingredients that have not been used for human consumption to a significant degree in the EU before 15 May 1997. Novel foods have to be authorised in the Novel Foods Catalogue. Eat Just's mung bean protein is the first novel legume protein to be deemed safe under EFSA's novel food scheme. According to sources, of the 43 novel food applications being reviewed by EFSA, 10% are for plant protein sources.
Since Brexit, the UK no longer has access to the novel food register provided by the EU, and the Food Standards Agency has to approve all applications. East Just is in discussions with the FSA, and we eagerly await the decision to bring us in line with Europe.
