Food and drink recalls more than double in 2015/16

The average cost of a significant product recall claim hit almost US$9.5M (£7.1M). Undeclared allergens (including mislabelling incidents) and pathogens were a major issue, as was contamination from glass, plastic and metal parts.

Half of food alerts from 2013 to 2016 are related to Allergens. This is no surprise due to the mandatory change in how allergens are declared on food packaging that was introduced in December 2014. The number of food alerts in each of 2015 and 2016 is more than double that seen in the previous two years. Food alerts involve a wide number of food commodities and businesses with no sector being obviously predominant.
