Natasha’s Law takes effect, but concerns raised

Up to 8 out of 10 businesses are not prepared to complete the required labelling which will require them to clearly display the following information on the packaging:

  • Name of the food.
  • Full ingredients list, with allergenic ingredients emphasised (for example in bold, italics or a different colour).

These changes will apply to businesses in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Food Labelling Services comments:

Recalls through allergens cause the majority of all product recaled in the pre-packed food sales. It is such an important aspect of food labelling, and imperative to get right for food safety. It concerns us that businesses are not prepared for this amend, and that in some cases businesses do not know what the 14 major allergens are, and how they should be labelled.
We have advised some clients on how to prepare labels to be compliant with Natasha's law, and will happily advise any business who contacts us. It is not simply the label that needs to be correct. There should be a traceability system in place to log which label has been applied to which product, to maintain due diligence.
