Portugal to trial origin labelling for milk
Speaking in Brussels on Monday Portugal’s minister for agriculture Capoulas Santos described the authorisation as “a measure that the sector sees as very important”.
“Consumers will unequivocally go to the supermarket shelf to be able to choose between milk produced in Portugal and milk produced in another source,” he added.
The measure is still due to be debated by the Council of Ministers and so it has not yet been confirmed whether this trial period will apply to milk alone or to processed and lightly processed dairy products.

Food Labelling Services comments:
With France already imposing country of origin labelling on dairy products, Italy enforcing it on 31st March 2017 and Greece, Finland, Lithuania also requesting for similar labelling, it seems inevitable that there will be EU legislation from Brussels stating how dairy products hsould be labelled for country of origin. Dairy producers and manufacturers in the UK should prepare themselves for this regulation, although, will Brexit have happened by the time this legislation is passed?
