Food Labelling Services comments:

Currently, under the main European Food Labelling Law, the Food Information Regulations 1169/2011, Front of Pack Nutrition Labelling is voluntary, although if delared, it has to be in the mandatory format. However, post Brexit, the UK will be free to decide whether to enforce through legislation the 'Traffic Light System' that is currently declared on some food products.

The current traffic light system was introduced in 2013 by the Department of Health to help consumers choose healthy products. The labels divide food and drink items into low, medium or high depending on how much fat, salt, sugar, saturates and calories each product contains. Those with the highest of each are marked in red with the most healthy products labelled green.

The aim to to clearly communicate to consumers which products should be eaten freely, and which should be restricted to treats, to help curb the current obesity epidemic that is affecting the UK.
